Flower Net Lisa See Books

I had read three books by Lisa See before reading this one. The others were steeped in Chinese culture and focused exclusively on China. Their culture is so different than ours. She is a great story teller in addition to learning about the culture. This book is about selling illegal parts of protected animals and making herbs and Chinese medicine. This story was about murder, international theft, gangs and terrorism by making so much gore in the killing of people, that the Chinese gangs had people cowed in speaking up. An American agent was sent to China with the idea that China and the United States could work together in solving the case. There is a love interest between the U.S. agent and a Chinese agent. It was fascinating seeing how the thinking of each side was so opposite of each other. The American agents had some understanding of the Chinese and shared this with newer agents to be aware in working with the Chinese. I enjoyed this book and will check out the other books written by Lisa See.

Flower Net Lisa See Books Reviews

The history of the areas that the characters visited were deeply explored, and also various customs that made the world much more tangible. Some of the imagery got quite graphic and was used to illustrate horrific crimes. I would have liked to have given this book more stars but the author left me pretty disinterested as to what would happen to the main characters. They had rich backgrounds but they themselves were pretty flat. I was more interested in the characters that very little information was given about. I also wish that the "star-crossed lovers" romance never happened. It made me care even less about them because it detracted from the great story rather than adding to it.
Quite a departure from Lisa See's usual genre, and the writing is every bit as good. If you loved Snowflower, China Dolls, or her other stories about love and friendship, you'll be very surprised (as I was) at the darkness of this look at the underground import/export business. I think the characters were well developed, and even though this is the first of a trilogy, the book probably stands on its own. You may want to read the next book, but you don't have to, in order to wrap up the story.
This book is quite different from Lisa See’s other novels that I’ve read. It is a mystery that involves murders, smuggling, gangs, etc. It also has a romance that I could have done without. The story is plot-driven and I liked the plot and the way it was interwoven with the culture of China and Chinese Americans. There were quite a few twists and turns. I didn’t like it quite as much as her other books which is why I’m giving it four stars rather than five. This book is the first of a series and I bought the three books together, as it was cheaper than buying them individually, and I’ll read the others. I should mention that even though this is a series, Flower Net can be read as a stand-alone book.
Combining the exotic world of China, the intrigue of illegal immigration and illegal shipments of contraband, Lisa See weaves an exciting mystery.
The story begins in China where a body is found in a frozen pond where the local people ice skate, here you meet the main heroine, a female MSP agent Li Hulin. The body is the son of th US ambassador in China
Then off the coast of California, the young State Attorney, David Stark, gets called to investigate a freighter floating, abandoned in the ocean off the coast of California. It is filled with sick illegal Chinese immigrants and a dead body. The son of a wealthy Chinese business man.
Are these murders connected? Lisa See brings the story together full of intrigue, plot twists, and danger. An excellent read and book 1 of a series of 3 Red Princess Mysteries written by her.
The book's strengths by far are its plot and setting. The plot definitely keeps you guessing, and offers lots of twists and shocking moments. As for setting, if you don't know too much about Chinese culture / China just after Deng Xiaoping began opening the country, this will be interesting for you to read for an inside look at the country. It was cool to read about a mystery not just set in China but also relevant to the culture of the country. I feel like very few mystery books go that length, setting their books in exotic locations but not delving into the larger forces that shape that setting.

The major issue with this book for me is that the two main characters have perhaps the most boring romantic relationship I have ever encountered in a book. Usually you are rooting for people to couple up even if you don't really like them all that much, but every time these two started flirting I just felt like yawning. This could be a personal problem for me more than others as I really love character-driven novels, and this is absolutely not one of them. The dull character problem can even be expanded to most of the minor characters as I was unable to differentiate between most characters with Chinese names (and this is coming from someone who has studied Mandarin for years).

Overall, the book was so-so. I finished it and it wasn't totally wasted time, but I could think of many more enjoyable books to read instead.
