I've already preordered the next book so that should tell you that I'm hooked!

After the Hawkweed Prophecy is pronounced, Poppy Hopper and Ember Hawkweed are switched a birth by an ambitious witch with her own selfish designs on the prophecy. Poppy is a witch unwittingly being raised by muggles. Ember is a really a Muggle presenting as a squib (Harry Potter term for witches who can't do magic) being raised by witches. Both of them become outsiders in the communities they are raised in because they never quite fit in. Moody Poppy is kicked out of several schools and force to transfer and move several times because of the unexplained things that happen around her when she loses control of her moods. Beautiful Ember is teased mercilessly by the other young witches, led by her ringleader cousin Sorrel.

The book really begins when Ember and Poppy meet by chance though nothing in this book really happens by circumstance. Everything happens for a reason. There are some really dark themes. Poppy's (adoptive) mother struggles with serious mental illness because of questions of Poppy's paternity (and maternity). Ember's mother lives in the shadow of her much more powerful sister Raven and tries to shield Ember from the scorn of the community.

The book is really great when it focuses on the sisterhood between Ember and Poppy as well as the other witches. Still, the book is really about Poppy. Ember comes off as a pretty little thing who yearns for things like nail polish while Poppy hungers to learn more about the strange world where ember resides. In exchange for a manicure set that Poppy finds silly, Ember begins to bring Poppy books about witchcraft and other witchy-supplies.

Unfortunately, when the book introduces Leo, a homeless teen, as a love interest, it really does a disservice to the themes of sisterhood. Suddenly, instead of thinking about each other or what they want to change in their sorry lives, the girls begin to spend more time daydreaming about Leo than solving their problems. Then, of course, there is the typical teen romance cliche: THE LOVE TRIANGLE. We're supposed to believe that Leo might choose Ember who is frequently described as sweet, pretty, docile and innocent in favor of the more worldly, traumatized Poppy. We're also supposed to care but we don't. It isn't explained until much, much later that Leo but be more involved in the two worlds the girls inhabit than we can imagine and it would seem that he'll have more of a role in the second book.

I thought the mood and world building in the book was phenomenal. I really wanted to learn more about the different witch clans. We know who switched the girls from the onset of the book so it is just for us to wait and watch as the girls come to the realization of why they feel like such outsiders in their respective communities. The showdowns that happen when they do are pretty neat. And yes, there is a "gratuitous" scene with a cat but despite being a cat lover, I found no fault with it as it was meant to highlight how much of a sociopath one of the book's characters really is and how far this character will go to hurt those around her.

The Hawkweed Prophecy The Hawkweed Series Irena Brignull Books Reviews

You were probably drawn in by the cool summary of witches, strong female characters, and a prophecy! Sounded cool to me too. However, about halfway through, this book loses a lot of momentum.
The beginning of was fantastic-full of dark prophecies, evil sisters, switched at birth babies. The writing was more lyrical, more prose. Poppy and Emma both didn't fit in their normal life and witch life, and they founds each other and became friends. I really wish it had stayed that way, because the author had a good thing going there.
But about halfway through there comes a boy. Now the concept of love triangle is introduced, as like, 3 girls love this really pointless guy. Seriously, I have no idea why he was there. Poppy and Emma are being used by him to make the other jealous, and they're also trying to stay friends and let the other one have him, while meanwhile the evil sister's daughter has some weird obsession with him. I don't understand why he was needed, unless this was supposed to be a lesson in how crushes ruin everything.
An then came the ending, which introduced another clan trying to off the witch queen, so of course there's a fight. As for Poppy and Emma...well, they got a very anticlimactic ending.
Overall I don't totally regret reading this, if only to see the potential this book had.
When reviewing this one, I found that I had to separate out the intended reader (teen) from me (adult).

I think that teen readers will really love this fable. It’s got everything a good fable needs magic, mystery, romance, and danger. There are covens of witches who may be at war, magical spells, and all sorts of dark enchantments. And it’s got a ton of adventure with a couple of girls you really like (and one you sort of like, even though you shouldn’t).

As an adult, though… you’ve got a trio of girls with no self-esteem completely gaga over a handsome homeless boy with no real personality (but, hey, he knows where to get the best stuff to eat – best garbage in town). The author does try to explain why Leo is so special, but he’s really not.

Girl 1 likes him because he’s the first boy who hasn’t treated her like a freak.
Girl 2 likes him because he’s the first boy she’s ever seen. (literally)
Girl 3 – see reason behind Girl 2’s instalove.

Besides the grown up woman in me wanting to take each of these girls and teach them how to be self confident, I did enjoy the fable itself. I just had to remove myself from adulthood for a while.

I think teens will love it. They’ll sigh over Leo – his trials, tribulations, and that moment when he finally takes a shower. They’ll want Poppy’s skills and Ember’s goodness. And they’ll want a little magic in their own lives.

Four stars for the fable. Just try to get past Handsome Homeless.
This book had many twists and turns that I did not expect. The way the author wove this intricate tale of love and loss truly was a work of art. I would recommendations this book to anyone who likes a little mystery and intrigue with a love story mixed in.
Original, creative and absorbing
Great story, written beautifully!! Can't wait for the next one in the series.
This book was an interesting read. I have been leaning toward teen and YA novels because of their light heartedness. This book was dark but in a way that worked and kept my attention.
